Glass and Window Carrying Vehicles

Glass carriers are produced by specialist vehicle builders and converters in a full range of weights and sizes to suit all aspects of the industry.

A standard van for example can be converted by adding an internal and external rack system, the most popular weigh range being 3.5 tonnes gross. At the larger end of the scale, 26 tonne glass carriers are produced to transport 15 tonnes of glass in a single load.

Glass carrying body specifications vary widely to suit individual transport requirements of a particular company. These transport requirements for example can include ability to transport glass as a palleted load, or full size 'Jumbo' plates normally carried on an external rack.

Glass is one of the most difficult and potentially dangerous cargos transportable by road. Safety information is available from the GGF's publications 'Glass Handling, Storage and Transport' and 'Use of Stillages by Glass Suppliers' To purchase a copy, click here. Further information can also be found in the Department of Transport's 'Safety of Loads on Vehicles' - Section 17 http://www.dft.gov.uk/

The GGF has also been working on two European Standards:

BS EN 13035-1:2008 Machines and plants for the manufacture, treatment and processing of flat glass - Safety requirements Part 1 Storage, handling and transportation equipment inside the factory and BS EN 13035-2:2008 Machines and plants for the manufacture, treatment and processing of flat glass - Safety requirements Part 1 Storage, handling and transportation equipment outside the factory.
